What is Genre?

What is genre?

Genre is a French word which means sort or style, it is often used to classify different types of art. Genre is used to group various types of art according to a predictable range of features and expectations. There are many different genres which exist for different arts, different genres in music, film, literature etc, however in this scenario some of the different genres for film are comedy, horror, thriller, western, sci-fi, action etc.

Comedy -

Comedy is a genre of film which uses humor as a driving force, the aim of a comedy film is to obtain laughter from the audience entertaining stories and characters. Even though the comedy film may use serious material it usually has a happy ending, not including 'black comedy'. This is because 'black comedy' is a style which uses themes which are usually considered serious or taboo topics, it i generally controversial therefore happy endings aren't always to be expected of. In comedy movies the settings are generically in places of good lighting as the viewers are meant to be in an uplifting mood when watching the movie therefore recording scenes in very dark areas may connote the wrong genre and wrong mood. The camera work is commonly naturalistic as it is filmed in a way to show no one is better. Sound is very important to comedy films as dialogue needs to be loud and clear so that the audience can recognize jokes and punchlines in order to understand the humor.

Action -

Action film is a genre where physical action takes precedence in the storytelling. The film will often have continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, life threatening situations and antagonists. The story usually revolves around the protaganist who has a goal, but is facing incredible odds to obtain it. The genre is closely associated with thriller and adventure. 
Sub genres - Action comedy. This genre combines action with comedy where characters bring out humor while action scenes are usually less intense than in the traditional action movie. 

Horror - 

Horror is a film genre which aims to seek a negative emotional reaction from the audience by creating a s sense of fear, panic and alarm by scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. . Horror films usually center on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event. Many Horror films include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. Traditionally, Horror films incorporate a large amount of violence and gore into the plot.
